Development of an adaptive CTM–RPIM method for modeling large deformation problems in geotechnical engineering

In this paper, a meshfree method called adaptive CTM–RPIM is developed to model geotechnical problems with large deformation. The combination of the Cartesian transformation (CTM), radial point interpolation (RPIM) and alpha shape method. To reduce requirement for meshes, CTM adopted transform domain integrals into line integrals, RPIM applied construct functions. method, which capable capturing severe boundary evolution due deformations, then introduced form CTM–RPIM. accuracy first verified by considering cantilever beam under small deformation, where influence key parameters on simulation results explored. Afterward, ability handle deformation demonstrated simulating beams deformations analytical solutions are available. Finally, proposed illustrated from both quasi-static dynamic aspects, slope failure problem footing bearing capacity modeled evaluate stability structures; 2-D soil collapse experiment using aluminum bars simulated show capability in describing flows. These benchmark examples demonstrate that numerical broad application prospects modeling engineering.
